Internship Opportunities
The Baltimore County Department of Aging (BCDA) offers many unique opportunities to students interested in:
- Working one-on-one with senior citizens with a range of abilities—from very active and independent, to frail, cognitively impaired and homebound—and, if applicable, their caregivers
- Learning more about the operations of an Area Agency on Aging, the aging process and resources available to the community
- Gain a broader understanding of the issues facing older adults, as well as their interests and abilities
APPLICATION PROCESS
- Review the BCDA internship positions potentially available or view the list of BCDA internship openings.
- Follow the application process for the Academic Credit Internship Program.
- BCDA staff will review applications, consider the fit with the department/division and the interests of the individuals. and select candidates to interview.
- Conduct interviews and determine the placements.
- Work with the prospective intern and the Office of Human Resources to arrange required screenings and a start date. (Unsuccessful candidates will be notified at this time.)
INTERN EXPECTATIONS
Students accepted into the internship are expected to:
- Attend orientation and sign a confidentiality agreement.
- Check-in periodically with their BCDA supervisor to ensure school requirements are being met and the intern has all necessary resources for an enjoyable and growth-oriented experience with the agency.
- Conduct a personal exit interview with their supervisor prior to the conclusion of the internship.
- Receive a survey following internship completion for their comment and feedback regarding the internship experience.
Interns will also be encouraged to participate in BCDA-sponsored professional development activities, including conferences, workshops, webinars, and lunch and learn sessions.
POTENTIAL POSITIONS BY DIVISION
The following divisions may be hiring for the intern positions listed.
The Administration Division provides services to both internal and external customers, including fiscal and computer operations, human resources, communications and special events and direct-service programs, including housing and employment, CountyRide and volunteer programs.
Intern experiences may include:
- Administrative functions
- Research
- Project-specific activities
- Direct contact with seniors living in the community
The Division of Individual and Family Services offers programs that provide:
- Information, counseling and screening for benefits and programs
- Specialized assistance to family caregivers and to low-income/vulnerable populations
- Education, advocacy and supportive services
- Case management
- Community outreach
Intern positions may include:
- Community Outreach Program Intern (Undergraduate students only)
- Ombudsman Program Intern (Undergraduate and Masters students)
