Baltimore County Police Department First in State to Provide Greater Transparency in Testing of Sexual Assault Kits
ORIGINAL February 8, 2023
Through funding made available by the Federal Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), the Baltimore County Police Department is proud to announce the launch of Maryland's first Sexual Assault Forensic Evidence – Inventory, Tracking, and Reporting (SAFE-ITR) website. This public-facing tool allows users to track the handling of sexual assault kits (SAKS) within the department’s possession. This is accomplished by tracking the inventory of these evidence kits, in 60-day reports that detail the progress the Baltimore County Police Department Forensic Services Section and Criminal Investigations Bureau continue to make in processing these kits. The website also includes information to assist victims, including “know your rights” information, and links to additional resources.
Forensic Services Section Director Rachel Lucas said, “We are excited to take this proactive step in transparency and accountability with our community, and to support survivors of sexual assault.”
