ORIGINAL February 6, 2024
On Wednesday, Baltimore County Police Officers will pay tribute to Sergeant Bruce Prothero, who was shot and killed in the line of duty on February 7, 2000. Sergeant Prothero was working a second job as a security guard at a jewelry store in Pikesville when he was fatally wounded.
Sgt. Prothero pursued four armed suspects who had stolen jewelry from the store. Two suspects were apprehended several days later, while the other two suspects were arrested approximately two weeks later in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. All four subjects were found guilty and received life sentences.
To honor Sergeant Prothero's memory, Baltimore County Police Officers will wear a memorial ribbon bar on their uniform or a mourning band on their badge. Sergeant Prothero had served with distinction for 13 years and was married with five young children at the time of his death. Sergeant Prothero and his family will always be remembered in our hearts and prayers.
