Microchipping Services for Pets
Microchipping is a quick and nearly painless procedure that provides permanent tracking information and identification that can't be lost, worn out or damaged. It's inserted by injecting a small chip between your pet's shoulder blades. Every animal adopted from the shelter gets microchipped. Watch a video guide to microchip implantation from Found Animals.
Should your pet be lost, special scanners read the chip, which can be traced to the manufacturer and then to your name, address and phone number.
Microchipping is not a substitute for animal licensing, which is required by law in Baltimore County.
GET YOUR PET MICROCHIPPED
Baltimore County pet owners can bring their dogs and cats to the shelter to receive the microchipping service for a low-cost fee of $10. To schedule an appointment, please call 410-887-PAWS (7297).
UPDATE YOUR INFORMATION
It's critical to regularly update your contact information on your pets' microchip, as well as confirm the company is still in service.
There's no universal microchip registry. Owners can use the Microchip Registry Lookup to find the manufacturer of their pets' microchip. If you don't know the number of your pet's microchip, please see your veterinarian. Residents can also use one of Baltimore County's five pet microchip scan stations. These scan stations are open 24/7 free of charge. They allow pet owners or the finders of stray animals to scan for a microchip, and give instructions on how to look up the number to either register the chip or reunite the pet with its owner.
Microchip scan stations are located in five parks throughout Baltimore County:
